Occupational Therapy Driving Assessments
Occupational Therapy Driving Assessments are comprehensive evaluations designed to ensure your safety and legality on the road. These assessments are crucial for individuals with medical conditions, disabilities, or age-related changes that may affect driving ability. Whether you’re returning to driving after an illness, adapting to new physical limitations, or addressing concerns about your driving skills, our expert assessments provide a thorough evaluation of your capabilities.
Our assessments typically include:
- A detailed off-road clinical assessment
- An on-road practical evaluation
- Recommendations for vehicle modifications or driving aids if needed
- A comprehensive report for you, your doctor, and relevant authorities

FAQs (Driving Assessment Specific)
How long does the assessment take?
The assessment typically takes 2-3 hours, including both off-road and on-road components.
What should I have ready for my assessment?
Have your current driver’s license, any relevant medical reports, and a list of current medications.
What happens if I don't pass the assessment?
We’ll discuss the results and potential next steps, which may include rehabilitation, vehicle modifications, and/or restrictions on your license.
Can I use my own vehicle for the on-road assessment?
The assessment will take place in your preferred vehicle transmission; automatic or manual. The assessment will be conducted in a dual-controlled vehicle. Please call us to discuss what current vehicle you have so that we can elect a driving instructor with a similar vehicle size and shape to yours.
How often do I need to be reassessed?
The frequency of reassessment varies based on individual circumstances. In some cases, reassessment may not be necessary, depending on the outcome of the initial assessment and the nature of the medical condition. For others, it may be recommended annually or at intervals specified by your healthcare provider. We tailor our recommendations to each individual’s unique situation to ensure ongoing safety and confidence on the road.
What types of vehicle modifications can be recommended?
Vehicle modifications can range from low-cost options such as spinner knobs and additional observation mirrors, to mid-high cost solutions like hand controls for acceleration and braking. Our recommendations are always tailored to the individual’s specific needs, aiming to enhance driving safety and comfort while maintaining independence.
How soon can I get an appointment?
We typically schedule assessments within 4 weeks of initial contact. However, this timeframe can fluctuate based on the volume of inquiries we receive, client location, and driving instructor availability. If your assessment is urgent due to license expiry or a license suspension notice from the local driving authority, please contact our office directly. We’ll review the possibility of an urgent booking or add you to our cancellation list to accommodate your needs as quickly as possible.
Will my license be suspended if I fail the assessment?
Not necessarily. The results are recommendations, and the final decision rests with your General Practitioner and/or your licensing authority.
Can I have a family member present during the assessment?
Family members can be present for the pre and post-assessment discussions, but not during the practical on-road driving component.
